The Hunger Games serve as reminders of violence. To survive at the Games, the main character must kill her friend. The novel is written on behalf of the main character Katniss Everdeen.
The state of Panem, formed on the North American continent after a series of natural disasters, is divided into twelve districts and the capital, Capitol. There were thirteen districts, but after a big uprising, cruelly suppressed by the authorities, District-13 was completely destroyed. The Capitol established the annual Hunger Games, which are televised throughout the country. Each district is obliged to send a young man and a girl to the Games. Twenty-four tribunes must kill each other on the Arena. The only surviving winner will get a normal and comfortable life.

Katniss Everdeen lives in a poor district, whose inhabitants are engaged in coal mining. At twelve, after the death of her father-miner, Katniss was the only support of the family. She learned how to hunt with a bow. The girl does not want to get married and have children. Katniss has big chances to get to the Arena. The names of the tributaries are written on cards, which are thrown into two glass balls and pulled out as a lottery.
The “harvest” is held on the main square of District 12 and is broadcast on television. In addition to the manager from the Capitol, the mayor and HaymitchAbernathy, the only living winner from District-12, is sitting on the podium next to two glass balls. To the dismay of Katniss, the manager pulls out a card with her little sister’s name. By law, any person can replace a tribute. Katniss does this because Prim will not survive on the Arena.

Peeta Mellark, the baker's son was chosen as a second representative. Katniss recalls how Pete saved her family from starvation immediately after the death of her father. He deliberately spoiled two loaves of bread and managed to give them to Katniss, for which he was punished by his mother. The girl did not dare to thank him.
After a heartbreaking farewell with their families, Katniss and Peeta are taken to the Capitol by a luxurious train. By the end of the journey, Katniss and Peeta managed to bring drunkard Haymitch to life and make him help them. Then a series of workouts follow. The tributes live in the sumptuous Training Center, where people with cut-off tongues serve them. Haymitch insists that Katniss and Peeta act like friends in public. Such behavior will increase their popularity and attract wealthy sponsors.
Three days later, individual screenings begin, at which the Games managers evaluate the tributes on a twelve-point scale. Katniss shoots in the direction of the managers sitting at the table, she knocks the apple out of the mouth of a roasted pig and gets eleven points. Then the turn of the interview comes, where Peeta confesses that he loves Katniss since his childhood.
This book describes the struggle for survival, the fight for live, and kindness. We strongly recommend reading this series as it will surely be a good read.
